16.10.2007 Keskustelutilaisuus: Kansainvälisen oikeuden epäonnistumisesta globaalin ympäristön suojelussa.

Keskustelutilaisuudessa väitöskirjatutkija Katja Keinänen Erik Castrén -instituutista alusti englanniksi kansainvälisen oikeuden epäonnistumisesta globaalin ympäristön suojelussa.

Katja Keinänen discussed the contentious issue of the fundamental limitations of modern international law in protecting the global environment which is also topic of her ongoing PhD project. She made an interesting argument that the failure of modern international law to protect the global environment is not so much due to the “underperformance” of international law and its institutions but essentially the failure derives from the very structures of international law itself. She further discussed the structural limitations of international “environmental” law from different aspects, concentrating mainly on the historical connections between trade and international law, inter alia, the historical origins of international law in the form of private trade.
