23.4.2009 Guest Lecture: Impunity for Human Rights Violations in Russia and the Challenges of Human Rights Defenders

Amnesty International and Ius Gentium Association organized an event concerning human rights violations in Russia with Karinna Moskalenko. Ms Moskalenko spoke about the struggles of human rights defenders and the constant impunity for human rights violations in Russia from the standpoint of a practising human rights counsel. Karinna Moskalenko is one of Russia’s leading human rights lawyers and known for several high-profile human rights cases. She has served as the counsel for Mikhail Hodorkovski, Garri Kasparov, Aleksandr Litvinenko and Anna Politkovskaya. She has also represented the victims of the Nord-Ost theatre hostage crisis and the families of chechen victims who have been killed, tortured or forcefully disappeared.

Karinna Moskalenko is the first counsel who has won a case against Russia before the European Court of Human Rights. She has since won over 25 cases against Russia. Currently she and her team have more than 100 applications pending before the Court. In 2006 Ms Moskalenko was awarded the Human Rights award of the International Helsinki Federation
